Before our first DIY project, our front yard was far from the welcoming space we envisioned. It was overgrown with weeds, lacked proper edging, and needed structured flower beds or careful plant selection. The potential was there, but it required much work. We decided to take on the challenge, driven by our love for gardening and the desire to create a beautiful, inviting outdoor space.
Starting Fresh: Clearing the Old
In early April 2024, with the promise of spring, we set to work on our front yard. The garden bed was our first target—cluttered with unwanted plants, overgrown weeds, and no actual shape or definition. We began by pulling out the weeds and removing the plants that didn’t belong, clearing the way for something new and beautiful. The process was time-consuming, but with each weed removed, we could see the potential of the space beginning to emerge.
Adding Structure: Edging and Mulching
With the bed cleared, we knew it was time to add structure. We created a clean, defined edge around the garden bed, giving it a polished look. We carefully shaped the edges using soil and black mulch, ensuring everything looked neat. The black mulch not only helped to retain moisture in the soil but also added a beautiful contrast against the vibrant green of the plants.
Creative Planting: A New Design Takes Shape
Next, we turned our attention to planting. Initially, we planned to dig out a triangle-shaped area for new plants in the grass, but as we started, the shape evolved into something more unique. What began as a simple geometric design turned into a creatively shaped garden bed that we couldn’t have planned better if we tried. It added character and a touch of spontaneity to the yard, making the space feel personal and unique.
Choosing the Perfect Plants: Blue Spruce and Dwarf Burning Bush
With the new bed ready, choosing the plants that would make our yard stand out was time. We visited our local nursery and selected two stunning trees: a Blue Spruce and a Dwarf Burning Bush. The Blue Spruce, with its striking blue-green needles, would provide year-round colour and texture, while the Dwarf Burning Bush, known for its vibrant fall foliage, would add a seasonal burst of red and orange. Planting these trees was the final step in our project, and once they were in the ground, we could see our vision coming to life.
The Final Transformation: A Space to Be Proud Of
Looking at our yard now, seeing how it has blossomed from its humble beginnings, is a marvel. The once weed-filled, shapeless space has evolved into a stunningly structured garden adorned with carefully selected plants that mirror our love of nature and gardening. The Blue Spruce and Dwarf Burning Bush now stand as the crowning jewels of our front yard, adding height, colour, and a profound sense of tranquillity.
Before upgrading our front yard, it was hard to imagine what could be possible in a space that seemed so unruly. With our first DIY project complete, we’re proud of our accomplishments. It’s not just a garden; it reflects our hard work, creativity, and love for making our home a more beautiful place. The transformation was not just physical but also emotional. It was a journey of frustration, determination, and, ultimately, joy. It’s a reminder that any space can be turned into something special with a little effort and much heart.
We hope our journey inspires others to embark on their DIY projects and discover the potential in their outdoor spaces. Whether it’s clearing out the old or planting something new, the joy of the process and the satisfaction of transforming a part of your home with your own hands is truly unparalleled
